Sigiriya’s history dates back to the 5th century when King Kasyapa chose this colossal rock formation as the site for his fortress and palace. The summit of Sigiriya served as a royal residence adorned with exquisite gardens, ponds, and frescoes. The king’s ambitious construction was not only a testament to his power but also a strategic move to fortify against potential invasions.
Legend has it that Sigiriya was born out of a power struggle between Kasyapa and his half-brother Mogallana. Fearing retribution for murdering his father, Kasyapa built Sigiriya to serve as an impregnable fortress, but his efforts were in vain as he met his demise in a battle against Mogallana.
To truly appreciate Sigiriya’s grandeur, one must embark on the climb to its summit. As you ascend the rock fortress, you’ll encounter the famous Lion’s Gate, an imposing entrance flanked by two lion’s paws.
